Article 2, Irish Identity and Ancestry

Article 2, Irish Identity and Ancestry

The Irish Constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann, as it is currently composed states:

It is the entitlement and birthright of every person born in the island of Ireland, which includes its islands and seas, to be part of the Irish Nation. That is also the entitlement of all persons otherwise qualified in accordance with law to be citizens of Ireland. Furthermore, the Irish nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and heritage.

For many living abroad in the Irish diaspora, Article 2 plays a significant role in shaping their sense of identity. It provides a legal and constitutional framework that acknowledges their place within the Irish nation, regardless of geographical distance. This recognition helps strengthen their connection to Ireland and their heritage. As the Irish diaspora continues to thrive and evolve, Article 2 serves as a reminder of the enduring ties that bind the global Irish community together, transcending borders and generations.
